Farming at Salle

Our Soil

Soil types vary from light sandy loam to boulder clay. Over the years the farm has been organised into manageable blocks, which has helped to improve labour and machinery efficiency and focus attention and timing on specific soil types.

We believe that the soil is our most valuable asset. Through the use of intelligent cultivation, attention to detail and the use of cover crops to build organic matter, we are able to maintain and even improve our soil quality over time.

Crop Rotation

A 7 year crop rotation of Winter and Spring cereals, Winter oilseed rape, sugar beet and peas / beans for human consumption is practised. In addition there is permanent grass (let to a local shepherd), woodland and wildlife maize.

Environmental Features

Salle Farms has established 6 metre wide grass buffer strips adjacent to watercourses, planted up field corners and field margins with wild bird seed and pollen and nectar mixes to encourage bees and other insects. We have established un-cropped areas in fields to encourage ground nesting birds and reduced fertiliser and chemical inputs in traditional grassland.

Catalyst Farming

Salle is one of the founding farms of Catalyst Farming, a collective of farms committed to better farming methods, bringing improvement to crop yield, cost effectiveness and a reduction in environmental impact. This is achieved through an iterative, research-led approach, sharing knowledge and data between farms to guide the next step.
